We just wanted to drop a little message on here to let everyone know that we’re going to be gone in Las Vegas at WPPI 2010, getting our photographer partying on. While we’re there we’re going to be checking out the Southern Weddings Magazine Party, Airhorns and Lasers, along with an awesome workshop led by the ever amazing Bui Bros, our second time at the [b] Party, perhaps getting together with our Photog Shootout friends, and lastly the second annual WPPI dinner party that was such a fun success last year (which is still in the planning process, just like it was last year!!! ). We’ll be on the trade show floor hopefully meeting up with friends new and old, so be sure to say hi if you see us! I know for sure you’ll be able to find us hanging out around the PickPic, ShootQ and the Vision Art booths. We’re also really looking forward to finally getting to meet our friends up in Canada from Last Forty Percent, as well as our good friend Kellie Kano, both of which we’ve been talking to online forever but never having gotten the chance to meet in person. We’re so excited!!!

After Vegas we’ll be flying straight to Florida for a destination wedding in Captiva Florida, though we might spend a couple extra days on the beach to get ourselves the last chance to relax before the wedding season gets crazy. We only have around 5 or 6 dates left for 2010 so we know it’s going to be a long one, and 2011 is already starting to book up.

Because we’ll be traveling from March 5th until the 15th please don’t expect us to be able to fulfill prints during that time, but if you do make any orders it will be our priority one, the moment we step back onto our doorstep! If you’re a bride and needing to get ahold of us, please call us on our cell at 812-361-9900 if you need anything at all. Even in Vegas or Florida we’re still here for you.

Danielle  and Nathan contacted us for photos before the baby was even born. We always love taking pictures of newborns, and their new baby was only a week old when we took these. I still can’t believe how tiny newborns are every time I see them. One of my favorite photos shows the baby’s arm next to Nathan’s thumb and it’s about the same size. We also had the help of a pair of red aussies on this shoot so I think that’s why the pics turned out so good. Did I mention how much we love military families?

We met Elizabeth and Erik at Lizzie and David’s Bloomington, Indiana wedding. We thought right then and there that these two were going to be lot of fun to work with, and after we shot their engagement session last fall we knew for sure. Their wedding was to take place in Atlanta, Georgia and after a long drive through a freak snow storm (btw, people in the south have no idea how to drive in the snow!) we arrived at our hotel and were ready to shoot their wedding the next day. We were excited to be down south, as we have some photographer friends down there and neither of us had done much more than drive through Atlanta.

The next morning we met up with Elizabeth at her parents’ house where I dropped Cathy off and headed over to the church to meet up with the guys. Erik was helping the band with their music that he had arranged for their ceremony (!) while Lizzie and David enjoyed the music. It felt like deja vu. Their reception took place high atop an Atlanta building in the Georgian Club, which had some of the best service of any venue we’ve shot at (THANKS!). We really enjoyed how their reception hall was split up into multiple rooms, so people could converse without loud music in one, and dance in another, which we thought was a great idea for future brides. Despite all the snow and cold weather the wedding went beautifully, the people danced all night long to the totally awesome jazz band, and we were sad for the night to come to an end as the two waved goodbye from the window of their Mini-Cooper and drove off to start their lives together.

Elizabeth & Erik- Thank you two for being one the sweetest couples ever!  Hope you had a blast on your honeymoon!!!

We first talked to Holly and Todd about their New Year’s Eve wedding less than 4 weeks before it was to take place. They had just become engaged in October and after being together for three years, they simply couldn’t wait any longer.

So a couple of weeks later, with a fresh layer of snow upon the grounds of the Champaign Country Club, we met up with Todd an hour before the wedding. We found him in a bit of a panic and slightly worried for his bride to be. Apparently, the salon doing Holly’s hair was an epic fail, as they say, and after two hours of the stylist screwing up her hair, Holly had thrown up her arms and gone home to do it herself. Todd shouldn’t have been worried though. Holly did an amazing job and was an absolute joy, as the rest of the day went by flawlessly. We had so much fun with this couple, counting down the clock with them, laughing with their friends and family, and having such an awesome time for our last wedding of 2009, and first (:-D) wedding of 2010.

I received an email from Tiffany several weeks ago that started with, “I don’t know if you remember me, but…” And we were like, REALLY? Of course we remember her!! In fact, anyone who read our blog a year ago remembers Tiffany! How could we possibly forget her or the event we shot for her?

A while back (over a year now!!) we were honored by the request of Tiffany to photograph her husband Joe’s deployment. Joseph was going off to war and Tiffany wanted us their to capture the emotions, and the feelings of the event. Unfortunately at the time, Cathy and I weren’t both full-time photographers, as we are now, so I was the only one available. It was tough being there without her. The emotion of seeing couples parting for months and years made me miss my wife more than anything. Thankfully, this time around, we could both be there together.

We showed up at the hangar where the troops were due to arrive around 3:30AM. There we met their three-month old son, Titan, who Joseph had only been able to see for five short days after he was born. He had on the cutest onesie, which looked like a camouflage army uniform complete with little boots. Tiffany and her friends had their “Welcome Home” signs ready, and every half hour the slightest sound outside made everyone stand up and wait anxiously. Little did we know, that we were due to wait for quite a while though, and every minute that passed the tension grew.

Finally, at 6am, the hangar doors rolled open, the troops marched in, and after only a few moments, they were released. The crowd of waiting families collided with the lines of soldiers, couples finding each other somehow among the flood, holding and kissing one another. Tiffany and Joe stood together, holding their faces close, crying, smiling, and looking into each other’s eyes for the longest time. The emotions, though just as heart-wrenching were so much different this time. Fear was replaced with hope, sadness with joy, and pride with thankfulness.

Seeing Joseph hold his son after being away for so long was indescribable. The emotions that went over his face so quickly, how much he wanted to show off his beautiful baby boy to his friends and the other troops, how he wanted to be together with his wife, words cannot explain.

That said, on with the photos. We hope they help to define what happened.

The soldiers had to leave once more for formal decommissioning, and although they would be back home soon, just saying goodbye for a couple of hours was emotional.

I could say that there have been a lot of photographers out there that have influenced how Cathy and I run our business. We’ve had a ton of help from a lot of amazing people out there, who’ve been kind enough to offer their advice and share ideas. That said, there has been no influence on our business that even comes close to my step-dad and how he runs his veterinary hospital. Herrin Animal Hospital has been in business in Bloomington, Illinois for over 30 years and has served thousands of clients. Lou and my mom, Lori, have run this business with one business model: Clients are part of your family. Treat them like they are a family member, always do everything you can for them, always be understanding of issues that your clients have, no matter how big or small. Do these things and people will continue coming back to you and your business.

I’ve looked at the clinic as the basis of our business. Everything I do for our clients is because of the example that Lou has given me. I still remember seeing how happy people were to see my family at the clinic when they came in, not just because they knew their dogs and cats would be safe with Dr. Lou, but because they were genuinely excited and happy to see him. He was, and always will be their friend. People come up to him at restaurants and give him hugs, they wave to him when he’s driving one of his cars, and they send piles and piles of Christmas cards.

A few months before they were to retire, my mom decided to plan a surprise retirement party and put a small ad in the newspaper inviting all of their past and current clients. I gave a call to Terry Mautner out of Indianapolis to see if he could DJ the event (Terry has become a good friend since working Danielle and Lucas’ wedding because of the awesome job he did for them). So, the food was prepared and the event was set. The question was, would anyone come?

Boy did they. Over 300 people showed up that afternoon, all piling into the room we’d rented to await the arrival of Dr. Lou (who had been tricked into thinking he was attending a friend’s birthday party). As soon as he rounded the corner to enter the room, we all yelled in unison, tears already forming in our eyes, “Surprise!” A flood of people rushed at Lou, forming a line for the chance to congratulate him, coming with stories, tears, and hugs for him and my mom for taking such good care of their pets. Seeing these people, these ‘clients’, many of which I’ve known for years, it was honestly hard to tell them apart from the family members of mine that came. It was like seeing people from our family, far off relatives that I’d never met, that Mom and Lou had known for years. My goal in my business is to have that kind of relationship with our clients and peers. We do our best to extend the same kindness and love to everyone we meet, and it’s what we strive for.

Congratulations, Lou and Lori (Mom)! We are so excited that you guys can finally enjoy the freedom of retirement. We love you both and can never thank you enough for the example of love and kindness that you have given us.

Style Me Pretty – Favorite Weddings of 2009 III

Nov. 28, 2009 – To start off with, I have to say that Annie is one of our sweetest brides ever. While we were in Chicago shooting Dyanne and Reid’s Oak Park wedding (which was coordinated by Kate, one of Annie’s bridesmaids!), she drove an hour just to meet with us at our hotel and talk about the details of her wedding: Chandeliers, vintage hairstyles, black floor-length gowns, a warmly-lit ballroom in one of the oldest hotels in Chicago. Everything about Annie and Josh’s wedding was full of simple elegance and tasteful sophistication. We could not wait to shoot it!

So, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, on a chilly morning in downtown Chicago, we headed to the Palmer House, by Hilton, where the girls were running in and out of the bridal suite with dresses and shoes, makeup and jewelry. And at the center of the storm, was the calm and cheerful Annie. Her bridesmaids were willingly at her beck and call, whether it was gluing on eyelashes, writing out placecards, or just giving an opinion on jewelry, they were there for her. Definitely one of the best group of bridesmaids and one of the best maid of honors I’ve seen yet. And then came time to help Annie into her dress …. oh the dress. This had to be one of my FAVORITE wedding gowns ever. It is so breathtaking and suited Annie perfectly as she was walked down the aisle by both her mom and dad toward her handsome groom, Josh.

The ceremony and reception were so full of love and joy. The band was over-the-top AMAZING and played their heart outs all night long while the guests danced and partied just as hard. And I have to mention that for a guestbook, Josh and Annie laid out a collection of vintage postcards for their guests to write messages on. What an awesome idea!! Anyways, this wedding was an amazing celebration to photograph. The night fled by so quickly and we were sad to pack up and leave at the end of the night. Annie and Josh – Thanks so so much to you and your families for being so gracious, so real, and so full of joy. Hope you enjoy the photos!!!! And here they are…
