That said, we knew they were perfect for a video project we’ve been working on with Northernlight Filmworks‘ John and Jen Moon (who are some of the absolute best wedding cinematographers in the midwest, if not the country in our opinion). All of us met up at Meredith and Ulises’ new place in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois and sat aside while John and Jen interviewed them about their experiences with working with us and went over their beautiful album for the first time. We can’t wait for you to see the video and it’ll be here when it’s done, so just be patient (and that goes for you too Mer! ).

Next we all piled into our cars and drove downtown to Millennium Park to shoot their newlywed session, and John’s steady-cam team met up with us to get some super-cool shots of us working. We had so much fun with these two and I’d love to say that it was ‘like‘ getting together with old friends, but in all honesty, that’s exactly what it was. We are happy to call them friends and can’t wait to see them again.

Nashville, Indiana — If you’ve never been to Nashville, IN, it’s definitely a nice place to visit on a lazy, sunny spring day. Tons of cute shops, horse drawn carriages, and the best strawberry shortcake on the planet (at the Hobnob Corner Restaurant). Since Jason had visited Nashville a lot growing up, he and Jennifer thought it would be the perfect spot for their engagement session, and we had a blast finding tons of cute little spots to shoot in. And even though Jason hates getting his photo taken (though I can’t understand why… these two could seriously be models), he was such a trooper and barely complained at all. Oh the things we do for love.

As the sun headed down we took a short drive over to Brown County State Park.

David seems to want to risk his life on every session. The photo on the right was his shot, the one on the left is mine. He fell down the hill which was incredibly steep and slippery to get it, but he thinks the scrapes were worth it. Me too.

Chicago, Illinois — We’ve been in talks with these two for quite a while now and were so excited to finally be able to shoot their engagement session in Chicago. Laura and John are a non-stop happiness machine, which might be the cheesiest thing I’ve ever said, but seriously these two just don’t quit! John (who seriously looks like Joshua Gates from Destination Truth, one of my absolute favorite shows) kept us all laughing the entire session. From chasing seagulls, to manly poses in tulips; it just makes me more excited about their wedding day and how fun they are going to be to work with. Anyways, thanks again guys for the fun, the laughs, and for the chance to get to shoot in one of my favorite cities.

Let me tell yah, Lake Shore Drive is cold 365 days of the year. I don’t care if it’s August. But, you’d never know from these two.

Word to the wise. When the wind hits, Buckingham Fountain’s spray likes to follow you, or at least me…

For some reason there was music playing through speakers in Grant Park at around 8pm for no reason. It reminded me of Disneyworld and was so completely random. Regardless, Laura and John decided to dance.

Bloomington, Indiana — It was so awesome to get to meet up with these two again, post-wedding (check out their Crown Point Wedding post)! Since Summer didn’t want to so-to-speak “trash” her dress completely, we decided to go to I.U. campus and take some relaxed portraits of her and her hubby Josh. It was a beautiful evening and these two looked hot! The campus was a little crowded on such a gorgeous night, so the catcalls of onlookers were endless! Several different people even asked to have their photo taken with the couple.

The session was a blast and I have to say that I highly recommend this to other brides. Its a great way to get more pictures of you in the most important dress you’ll ever wear without the stress and time constraints of the wedding day. Anyhoo, on with the photos!

West Lafayette, Indiana — This past Tuesday, Dave and I drove up to West Lafayette where we met Sara and Josh on Purdue campus (Boiler up!…. sorry…. had to do it), along with their cute cocker spaniel, Daisy. Sara and Josh originally met at Purdue through their fraternity and sorority, although they didn’t start dating until a few years later. So they figured that Purdue was the perfect spot for their engagement photos. It was a great evening of reminiscing about college days for all of us, since Dave and I met there too and had fun wandering through the union and pointing out landmarks from our days there. Sara and Josh were laid back and so easy to work with. Thanks you two! Can’t wait for your wedding this summer in Indy!

Daisy’s 427th take. She kept cracking us up because when Daisy sees a treat she starts eating it before it’s even in her mouth.

Danielle  and Nathan contacted us for photos before the baby was even born. We always love taking pictures of newborns, and their new baby was only a week old when we took these. I still can’t believe how tiny newborns are every time I see them. One of my favorite photos shows the baby’s arm next to Nathan’s thumb and it’s about the same size. We also had the help of a pair of red aussies on this shoot so I think that’s why the pics turned out so good. Did I mention how much we love military families?

I received an email from Tiffany several weeks ago that started with, “I don’t know if you remember me, but…” And we were like, REALLY? Of course we remember her!! In fact, anyone who read our blog a year ago remembers Tiffany! How could we possibly forget her or the event we shot for her?

A while back (over a year now!!) we were honored by the request of Tiffany to photograph her husband Joe’s deployment. Joseph was going off to war and Tiffany wanted us their to capture the emotions, and the feelings of the event. Unfortunately at the time, Cathy and I weren’t both full-time photographers, as we are now, so I was the only one available. It was tough being there without her. The emotion of seeing couples parting for months and years made me miss my wife more than anything. Thankfully, this time around, we could both be there together.

We showed up at the hangar where the troops were due to arrive around 3:30AM. There we met their three-month old son, Titan, who Joseph had only been able to see for five short days after he was born. He had on the cutest onesie, which looked like a camouflage army uniform complete with little boots. Tiffany and her friends had their “Welcome Home” signs ready, and every half hour the slightest sound outside made everyone stand up and wait anxiously. Little did we know, that we were due to wait for quite a while though, and every minute that passed the tension grew.

Finally, at 6am, the hangar doors rolled open, the troops marched in, and after only a few moments, they were released. The crowd of waiting families collided with the lines of soldiers, couples finding each other somehow among the flood, holding and kissing one another. Tiffany and Joe stood together, holding their faces close, crying, smiling, and looking into each other’s eyes for the longest time. The emotions, though just as heart-wrenching were so much different this time. Fear was replaced with hope, sadness with joy, and pride with thankfulness.

Seeing Joseph hold his son after being away for so long was indescribable. The emotions that went over his face so quickly, how much he wanted to show off his beautiful baby boy to his friends and the other troops, how he wanted to be together with his wife, words cannot explain.

That said, on with the photos. We hope they help to define what happened.

The soldiers had to leave once more for formal decommissioning, and although they would be back home soon, just saying goodbye for a couple of hours was emotional.

A little back story is necessary for this engagement session. If you’ve read our blogs before or know me very well, you’ll know that I’m from Bloomington, Illinois (a story I always find amusing since we live in Bloomington, Indiana). My parents run Herrin Animal Hospital (well, they are retiring in about 20 days or so and we’ve got their retirement party coming up soon in a blog entry!) and I lived in Bloomington for most of my childhood. A while back I started finding people I went to high school with on facebook. One of them was Emily, who I went to school with since I was no taller than a yard stick. She’d started following our blog and loved our photos and when she got engaged we were so excited when she contacted us about her wedding.

Well a little while back we met up with her and her super-nice fiance, Mike, in my hometown and went to Miller Park, a regular childhood destination for me. It turned out to be an absolutely gorgeous day surrounded by days of yuck. We totally lucked out. Anyways, backstory and location aside, on with the photos!

So Emily and.. well… Okay, Mike is a HUGE White Sox fan. Emily likes supporting his love.

Miller Lake was absolutely pristine that day. Barely a ripple.

We were also graced with one of the prettiest sunsets I’ve seen in a long time.

We absolutely loved shooting this session. The beautiful day, and the flashbacks to high school were wonderful. We cannot wait to shoot Emily and Mike’s wedding next year!

Sarah and Eric, the mom and dad of today’s family session, met at Indiana University, here in Bloomington, about five years ago while they were going to school. Now married, they have a beautiful baby boy, Alex, who absolutely was a total ham for the camera. We always love taking pictures of children at weddings so when we get the chance to have that be a bit of the focus for a shoot we always jump at the opportunity. Cathy and I simply love kids, and our nephew and (future) niece live in Chicago, Illinois so we don’t get to see them very often. These sorts of opportunities are a nice excuse to make silly faces at children.
